I think you first need a letter that you can circulate to the concerned people citing the purpose for raising funds, inform them about your NGO, and give your contact details. Therefore, you first need to know how to write a fundraising letter.

Fundraising letters are generally charity letters meant for sending a request for raising funds for a social cause. They are unsolicited letters that are sent to a number of unknown recipients at a time. The purpose is to create awareness about your objective and encourage people to participate in the cause. For example, the prize money won by contestants in reality shows is given as charity to needy organizations. They are no-nonsense letters and are categorized as formal letters.

Persuasive style of writing is the key to draft such letters. As you have to convince people to contribute funds, writing becomes a challenging task. If the reader does not find the content interesting while skimming through it, he will keep aside your letter and never bother to read it again. Hence, you need to be thoughtful while expressing your ideas.


Half of the battle is won if you complete your market research to identify the right people who are sensitive towards your cause. For example, a doctor may be interested to give funds for setting up a cancer hospital. Next, your letter must convince the reader about the credibility of your organization. Any person may not like his money to be misused or wasted. Therefore, do share the credentials, future plans, and any other information that leaves a good impression about your organization. Do pull your reins and don’t go overboard while praising the institution. It may seem to be a fake.

Similarly, discuss why you are raising money, in what manner the collected money be used, who will manage the funds, etc. Such pertinent questions arise in every reader’s mind. A clear and honest answer may put the reader in a positive frame of mind. Ensure not to exaggerate. Your purpose is to request and not to impose.

You need to ensure that the tone is polite and the sentences are professionally worded. Do not make typo and grammatical errors. Such minute details play an important role in creating a good impact.
