On any usual working day, you must have ever received a mail, titled "Good bye", from the human resource department of your organization. Such writings make the person feel special and help in sustaining long-term relationships with him. It also makes the person depart on a happy note.
It is also a courtesy gesture to make the person know that you are aware of his decision and you are there to help him in whatever way you can to make him leave smoothly. These letters can be both formal and informal. Even in a formal format, some element of casualness is there. They are positive writings with no ill-feelings for the leaving person. The letters written to friends and relatives are completely free from formalities.
Whenever, you write a good-bye letter, keep the tone friendly and positive. Show your happiness and excitement for the development in the person’s life. You should also be supportive to his decision and make encouraging statements. For example, "I am happy to know that you are taking up a job abroad. I am sure that you will do well and grow more".
You can also recall some of the incidents of the good time you had spent together. For a colleague, you can praise his qualities and thank him for his valuable contribution to the organization. Remember to keep your appreciation within limits to make it sound genuine. The letter should be brief and simple to understand.
While writing on a personal note, you are free to write whatever you want. You can use different colors, include different calligraphic styles, and write sentences interspersed with emoticons. Sometimes, people paste pictures of the time spent together, with dates and comments, to create good-bye albums. They are presented to the person along with the letter and bouquets.
